A Texas Fish Commission meeting on Tuesday could set the stage for the industry to be able to produce fish tanks and other accessories for a much larger pool of fish and a much wider variety of fish species.
It’s a step forward for the fish hobbyists, who have been struggling to compete with big box stores that have their own fish tanks that can hold as many as 2,000 fish and the vast majority of those are large commercial fish like cod, bass, trout and mackerel.
There’s a lack of demand from the hobbyists for tank decorations, which are used to attract more fish to fish tanks.
The hobbyists are looking to diversify their supply, which they are currently relying on from specialty stores like Aquarium Supply Company, a local distributor, which has seen a decline in sales due to the popularity of big box retailers.
The hobbyists plan to use their new license to manufacture and sell fish tank decor and other products for a larger pool, said Chris Satterfield, president of Aquarium Supplies.
That’s good news for hobbyists in Texas who want to keep fish and wildlife happy and healthy.
“We’ve got a really good market in Texas for fish tanks,” Satterfields said.
“A lot of people in Texas are looking for fish tank decoration and fish tanks.”
The Texas Fish Commissions is scheduled to hold a public hearing Tuesday on the proposed license, but a public meeting on the regulations is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Capitol Building, in Austin.
