Texas Senate candidate derek Fisher says he was gay, married to his wife and that he is now a father to a child.
In an interview with The Hill, Fisher said he believes he has earned his victory in Texas, and that his opponent in the race, GOP Rep. Pete Sessions, is a closeted gay man.
“I’m a proud gay man, and I’m very proud to be a father, because that’s what my wife, who is also a woman, and my child are going to be,” Fisher said.
“My children have not known anybody else as my spouse and my wife.”
He added, “I’m very grateful to my wife for helping me with this.
My children are now very comfortable with me.”
Sessions was one of a number of prominent Republican lawmakers who spoke out against President Barack Obama’s decision to extend protections for gay couples in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide.
Sessions said on Tuesday that he believes same-day marriage is unconstitutional and has not been swayed by the Supreme’s ruling.
“As a Christian, I believe marriage is between a man and a woman,” Sessions said.
